Commanding the Edit Suite: Terminal Tricks for Editors

As a video editor there are lots of creative tasks to do, and a lot of tedious tasks to do. Folks shouldn't be afraid of the command line, it’s like doing the same tasks by hand, but just a little different. These are some of the strategies I have applied during my time freelancing and editing that have saved me hours of work and effort.

10:05 - 10:45 am

Art of the Stringout

While working in any complicated filmmaking environment, coming up with creative editing strategies to help you organize and visualize story ideas is where the stringout comes into play.  It’s a place to mashup and conceptualize, while also getting the big picture overview on reams of footage and shot coverage. This presentation will offer tips and tricks in both Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro on how to do just that.

10:50 - 11:30 am

The State of Editing in 2025

Barry Clegg, Senior Editor for FRONTLINE Audience Development will take you through the basics of finishing, so that your edit can be as polished as possible. With editors being asked to "do it all" these days, you may find yourself running out of time to make your piece shine. We will cover the basics of color correction, as well as some audio tips to get your rough cut client ready.

11:35 - 12:00 pm

AVID

For decades, transcriptions have been essential for helping creatives piece together storylines in the unscripted world. As unscripted content continues to expand with ever-increasing hours of footage to process, they’re more critical than ever. Thanks to AI and integration into Non-Linear Editing systems, transcriptions have evolved beyond narrative-building to become powerful time savers.

12:00 - 1:00 pm

Lunch Break & AMA Networking Tables!

During the lunch break, pull up a seat and chat with working editors, assistant editors, and post production specialists about your interests and questions.

1:00 - 1:40 pm

It’s a Wild Wild World

What you need to know to be an effective editor in the Social Media marketplace

1:45 - 2:25 pm

Color Demo

In this forward-looking roundtable discussion, our panel will explore the possibilities and challenges AI brings to the media production landscape. Panelists will share practical applications, a live "sandbox" demonstration, what they're discovering that works (and doesn't work), and their perspectives on how to think about AI’s place in our evolving workflows and creativity. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions for a dynamic Q&A.

2:30 - 3:20 pm

Timeless Tools for Editing

While editors and assistants face constant change in terms of technology and workflows, the essentials of a compelling visual narrative remain timeless. This session will focus on the craft of storytelling to deliver an emotional response in your audience, no matter what format or genre you work in. Powerful tools like contrast, cause and effect, mastering time and also some little known principles from traditional Japanese theater that really make a story pop.
