MPC & Emerson College Host Summer Film Camp
The Massachusetts Production Coalition (MPC), in partnership with Emerson College's School of Film, Television and Media Arts, welcomed 10 high school students in July to its Summer Film Camp, a free week-long program introducing students to the skills, collaboration, and craft of filmmaking.
Students from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, East Boston High School, TechBoston Academy, Swampscott High School, and Cambridge Rindge & Latin School spent the week immersed in the filmmaking process, learning in Emerson's Paramount soundstage and production facilities with industry-standard equipment under the guidance of faculty and working professionals.
Designed as an immersive filmmaking experience, the camp challenged students to think creatively, solve problems collaboratively, and develop technical skills while learning in a professional production environment at one of the country's leading film schools.
Throughout the week, students trained with Harlan Bosmajian (Cinematography), Travis Trudell (Lighting & Grip), Hanadi Elyan (Directing), and Allyson Sherlock (Post-Production). Working with professional actors, they rotated through crew positions while directing, lighting, filming, and editing scenes they reimagined in different film genres. Along the way, students gained hands-on experience in the collaborative filmmaking process, from pre-production and filming through post-production, as they built their creative ideas from script to screen.
The week concluded with a viewing reception at Emerson’s Bright Family Screening Room, where parents, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the students' accomplishments and watch the completed scenes they created together.
Shaun Clarke, Interim Dean of Emerson College's School of Film, Television and Media Arts and an MPC Board Member, said:
"We were thrilled to once again collaborate with MPC and welcome a group of talented local teenagers to our campus and expose them to the tools of the film and television industry. They had the opportunity to learn from our talented faculty and put those lessons into action. It is critical to both Emerson and MPC that we continue to build and foster film and television production expertise in Massachusetts."
Building on the success of this pilot program, MPC and Emerson College look forward to continuing the partnership in Summer Film Camp by bringing together the strengths of industry and higher education to expand access to film education for the next generation of filmmakers.
