MPC Updates & Annual Review
The past year has been remarkable for our industry. With a new year underway comes new opportunities to grow, and we want to share a few highlights from the past year that you made possible as we look ahead!
There's no doubt about it.. the global demand for content in films, episodic series, advertising, and short form media has never been greater and shows little sign of slowing anytime soon. Together, we are committed to building an economy and culture where Massachusetts will continue to grow as a destination for the creation and production of film and media content of all kinds.
If you haven't already, we hope you will join MPC this year as an Annual Member to be part of this growing community with us. So much more to come!
If you missed Mass Media Expo in the fall, videos from the conference are now available online from WGBH Forum Network! Check out keynote talks with film and content producers, technology and thought leaders, and more.
Read below for important advocacy updates and a recap of some highlights from the past year.
Advocacy & Public Policy
As you know we are working hard to remove of the "sunset" of the state's film and television incentive program, currently set to expire in the end of 2022. We are supporting a House and Senate bill to become law that would remove this date.
Last year through a tremendous campaign we achieved 114 co-sponsors to the House and Senate bills, demonstrating strong support to continue the film and television incentive program. Our bills received a hearing, and now we must push vigorously to ensure action is taken by the legislature to adopt this measure into law this session.
Recently, we launched new landing pages on MPC's website for industry members to follow campaign updates, as well as an information section for legislators. We also released a new animated video outlining the economic impact of the incentive program for lawmakers.
This year there will be new opportunities for grassroots campaigns and lobbying events in the State House for industry members to rally. We can not emphasize the importance of everyone's active participation in these efforts enough! Lawmakers must hear from YOU again and again to increase the pressure and urgency to act.
Through the legislative session we will distribute regular communications in the State House that highlight local impact of the incentive and growth in our industry. As well as organize a series of briefings for lawmakers at the State House on specific industry themes, and meetings and set visits with legislators in their districts to hear from local workers and business.
Please watch for calls to action as our campaign intensifies. Follow updates and learn about the legislative process on our Advocacy Center page.
With this work also comes significant costs. Your support is needed to ensure we have the resources to continue this campaign. We hope you will consider making a contribution to Keep MA Film Jobs Alive!
MPC Community & Programs
MPC's community and programs are growing! We're especially proud of the impact and opportunities these create. Together we are shaping a new era.
A few highlights worth reflecting on..
In the past year local film and series production continued to grow. In major productions alone, 28 movies and series filmed in the state. More prized episodic series projects continue to film locally, including Season 2 of "Castle Rock" for Hulu, "Emma" for the soon to be launched Quibi, the limited series "Defending Jacob" for Apple TV+, and Season 2 of "The Society" for Netflix going into production this year. The trend for more streaming content filmed in state appears very bright!
In 2019 MPC reached over 1,700 combined attendees at more than 15 unique programs and events including: Member Meetings, Workshop Series and new Seminars, Women Connect, PA Workshop, and another wildly successful annual Mass Media Expo.
We are grateful for significant support from event hosts and partners at WGBH, District Hall, Cambridge Innovation Center, Red Sky Studios, Soundtrack Group, High Output, Arnold, Digitas, Hill Holliday, MullenLowe, Windy Films, and LogMeIn.
We welcomed a broad range of new company members to our dynamic and growing community - from large media groups and agencies, to local industry vendors, and creative production teams. Get to know them in our Member Directory!
MPC's Higher Education Consortium is also growing, welcoming new members to join leaders from over 20 universities and college programs to this important working group. This year the consortium created a new Student Media Summit program with over 140 students participating from more than a dozen institutions to share resources, learn from a careers panel, and take part in the Student Film Pitch.
Thanks to you the most for your participation in these efforts. You make this community special and we're truly excited to grow our work together and build a bright future with you!
