MA Film Jobs 1-Year Anniversary

One year ago, the state's Film & Television Incentive was made permanent. Join us to recognize this important milestone and take a moment to thank your State Legislators.

MPC Members and Supporters,

We’re thrilled to acknowledge the 1-year anniversary this week of passing the state budget that made the Massachusetts Film & Television Incentive program permanent!

With enormous gratitude we thank the State Legislature for taking action to prevent the law from expiring and coming to an agreement that would protect and allow the state’s film and television industry to continue growing for many years to come. We would also like to thank Governor Baker for signing the package into law through the state budget.

Join us in celebration by taking a moment to thank your State Legislators using this simple form. It only takes a moment!

As most of you will recall, this legislative victory was the result a long 2 and 1/2 year campaign, that succeeded through an enormous and consistent effort from our members, supporters, and the community at large from local film workers, talent and businesses, to representatives in the communities impacted by film and television production. Your stories made a difference! We would also like to acknowledge and thank our union and organization partners in this effort: IATSE Local 481, SAG-AFTRA New England, Teamsters Local 25, the MPA, and FilmMA, among many others who contributed advocacy, resources, and fellowship in this long campaign.

With pleasure we are able to report the permanent extension of the Film Tax Incentive is achieving precisely what the program is intended to do: create jobs, support local businesses, and increase spending in cities and towns across the state. As a result of this new and stable environment we have seen production steadily grow with over 17 major productions already filming or underway in 2022 alone. Numerous local businesses have made and are continuing to make significant investments to expand their capacity – including doubling soundstage space in the state; purchasing new production-related equipment and technology; increasing services; and investing in workers and training to support this growing infrastructure.

Many of the exciting trends and developments in the local industry were captured in a feature section in Variety with a "Spotlight on Massachusetts" released in June. You can read the contents of the special edition online here and the digital articles below.

In addition we’ve seen many productions filmed in Massachusetts released in theaters, streaming services, and television to worldwide acclaim, including numerous awards for the Academy Award winning Best Picture film “CODA” directed by Cambridge-native Sian Heder. Other notable releases include: “Julia” (HBO Max), “The Tender Bar (Amazon), “Don’t Look Up” (Netflix), “Dexter: New Blood” (Showtime), and “Mother Android” (Hulu).

This momentum in addition to a stable incentive program sends a clear message to filmmakers and executives that Massachusetts is open for business and a place where world-class film and media production is the standard.

This success is not to be taken for granted. It is an ongoing effort to engage state lawmakers on the progress our industry is making, make sure our impact is known, and prepare for future challenges. With inevitable changes ahead, we must be prepared to respond to the evolving dynamics in state government.

We couldn’t be prouder of our community with all that's been achieved to mark this special occasion and everything we have to look forward to together.

Congratulations, and thank you for continuing to support our work!
