MPC Annual Message

Reflecting and a look ahead in 2022.

MPC Members & Supporters,

2021 was a year of progress, hope, and new challenges. Through it all we've managed to persevere, lift each other up, and ensure our industry thrives and grows. Reflecting on the past year and looking ahead, we couldn’t be prouder of our community with all that's been accomplished together and everything we have to look forward to!

As the film, television, and media production landscape continues to expand and evolve to changes brought by the pandemic, we commit ourselves again this year to building an economy and culture in Massachusetts that will grow as a destination for the creation and production of film and media content of all kinds, and that embraces new perspectives as a large and inclusive industry.

If you haven't already, we hope you will join MPC this year as an annual member to be part of the movement with us!

MA Film & Television Incentive

A really big deal.

After a long and hard fought campaign stretching over the past three years.. WE DID IT! In July, with the support of the governor and legislature, the State Budget for FY'2022 passed into law removed the sunset of the Film Tax Incentive without imposing a new expiration date. This incredible achievement protecting thousands of jobs and hundreds of local businesses would not have been possible without your support and tireless advocacy!

Looking ahead, MPC will continue to work to build influence to the benefit of our industry and protect the film incentive. We will continue to bring stakeholders and the production community together, inform state lawmakers on the progress our industry is making, make sure our stories are heard, and prepare for future challenges. With inevitable changes ahead in both executive and legislative branches we must always be prepared to respond to the evolving dynamics in state government.

A BIG year for film, TV, and streaming production...

In major productions alone, over 30 movies and episodic series filmed in Massachusetts by studios and streamers including: Disney, HBO, Netflix, Amazon, AppleTV, Showtime, and AMC. The trend for high quality streaming productions filmed in the state continues to accelerate as consumers' appetite for streaming and on-demand content increases.

Because of the success of our advocacy, we are already experiencing growth in productions, jobs, and new or expanding local businesses that support them. As studios, streamers, and marketers continue to increase production, we are prepared for tremendous growth over the near and long-term.

MPC Programs & Community

Since the pandemic hit in 2020 we pivoted to focus first on our community’s most pressing needs; providing information, support, and conversations on relief programs, set safety practices, and navigating the evolving challenges to producing content. This year we held over a dozen virtual events and Zoom forums to address a wide range of topics vital to our members and broader community to support their needs.

We were thrilled to return with our first in-person event in November with a hugely successful new Editors Bootcamp program. We are looking forward to expanding impactful skills-building programs like these, and offering more in-person programs throughout the coming year as restrictions ease. We will also continue to support the community through virtual events and meetings.

Education & Diversity

To respond to the needs of the industry we are working hard to grow our suite of programs to focus more deeply on hard skills and workforce development, and to reach new communities with a meaningful emphasis on diversity and inclusion as we grow our workforce towards an equitable future.

In eduction initiatives, MPC's Higher Education Consortium continues to meet and support new opportunities for students to connect and access the industry. Our growing Youth Media Cohort, composed of member organizations working in underserved communities, is coalescing to build new pathways for young people to gain valuable skills and help us make workforce initiatives accessible and reachable to diverse populations. We are truly excited about the progress to be made this year to have a greater impact going forward.

We also want to hear from you! Write us to let us know what you need, and what kinds of programs and opportunities you would like to see from MPC this year and beyond.

Thank you for your participation in all of these efforts. You make this community special and we're truly thrilled to grow our work together and build a healthy and bright future with you. Happy New Year!
