Happy Hour with Trish Sie

We’re thrilled to welcome director Trish Sie for an inspiring Happy Hour conversation!

Trish is the director of “The Sleepover”, the Netflix family adventure-comedy filmed in Mass in the fall of 2019 and released in August. Trish’s dynamic career as an inventive filmmaker and collaborator has brought her acclaim for the energetic creative style she brings to films, commercials and music videos. She’s directed ads for brands such as Levi’s, Sony, Haagen-Dazs, Old Navy, Dole, and more. Trish rose to notoriety making innovative award-winning music videos with the band OK Go (we highly recommend watching the excellent making-of for the viral hit Upside Down & Inside Out).

About Trish Sie

With a background in music, dance, and choreography, director Trish Sie brings a fresh, inventive, kinetic and energetic approach to filmmaking. Her passion for playfulness and innovation characterizes her acclaimed signature style. She brings humor and a whimsical approach to storytelling, characters, movement, timing, music, and space.

With a degree in music theory and a decade as a professional championship dancer and choreographer, Trish dived into filmmaking in 2006, when she created, directed, and produced her first official music video: Here It Goes Again for her brother’s band, OK Go. The band rehearsed on treadmills for 10 days at Trish’s dance studio, then Trish shot the video in a single, uncut take, using a friends borrowed camera. That treadmill video earned Trish a Grammy Award for best short-form music video. Since then, Trish’s other ground breaking concepts and direction for the rock band OK Go have produced some of the most universally heralded and ubiquitously downloaded music videos of all time.

Success as a music video director led to commercial work for Trish. She has shot ads for Levi’s, Haagen-Dazs, Sony, Old Navy, Dole, Carl’s Jr, Hunts, and more. Her work has been honored by Creativity Magazine, the Cannes Advertising Festival, and Saatchi & Saatchi’s New Director’s Showcase.

Trish also creates her own short films and concept videos. Her most recent short, Not Alone, enjoyed success on the festival circuit, screening at BAM, Henson’s Puppets on Film, Atlanta Film Festival, and the LA Puppet Festival. Sie’s first feature film, Step Up All In, was shot in native 3D and hit theaters in August of 2014, grossing more than $90 million worldwide. According to The LA Times, “Sie packs in her exuberantly choreographed and staged dance scenes as tightly as beads on a necklace,” and The New York Times says her film “exudes the infectiousness of an old-fashioned movie musical.”

In addition to Directing, Trish is also a regular creative collaborator and choreographer for the imaginative and world-renowned dance company, Pilobolus.
