MPC Annual Updates

Reflecting on the past year and a look ahead at 2023.

MPC Members & Supporters,

The past year has been one of progress, reconnecting, and building pathways for the future. Reflecting on 2022 we're pleased to share some highlights below. We couldn’t be prouder of our thriving industry, how our community comes together, and everything we have to look forward to.

If you haven't already we hope you will join MPC this year as an annual member to be part of this movement with us!

Advocacy & Public Policy

January 1st marked the first year of a permanent Film & Television Incentive in place. We started the year celebrating Massachusetts productions with Academy Award wins for "CODA", and finished with major holiday releases for "Spirited" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody".

In 2022 over 30 productions filmed across Massachusetts for major studios, television, streaming services, and independent production companies. Because of the film incentive's new stability, local businesses are making significant investments in infrastructure, equipment, and workers to support the future of the industry. Over the past year multiple new soundstages and production facilities have opened, doubling capacity in the state.

MPC continues to work diligently alongside stakeholder organizations to solidify and build support for our industry through advocacy in the state house, informational campaigns, and now welcoming a new Governor's administration and legislative session. Among highlights from the year, we supported a Variety magazine special edition on Massachusetts, distributing copies in person to every legislator's office to thank them.

Filmed in Massachusetts! Where to Stream.

We've updated our Filmed in Massachusetts page on where to find recent productions on your favorite streaming platforms. Check it out!

MPC Programs & Community

In 2022 MPC produced over a dozen programs serving more than 1,200 industry members. Starting the year with a series of virtual events, some highlights include filmmaker discussions, The Working Actor, and Thinking Fresh About Creative Businesses, drawing hundreds of online viewers and participants. This summer we were thrilled to return in person with new filmmaker workshops on fundraising and social impact, and a Fall Member Meeting to honor Lisa Strout, director of the MA Film Office on her retirement for over a decade of service to the Commonwealth.

In November we were thrilled to present a second annual Editors Bootcamp in partnership with GBH Boston featuring a new lineup of presentations, panel discussions, and resources. Videos are now available online of the talks and presentations!

Education & Diversity

To respond to the needs of the industry we are growing opportunities to offer skills-based programs and reach underrepresented communities. In the spring we produced two new PA Workshop sessions and partnered on a new DEI initiative The Konnect held at the Boston Public Library in Roxbury.

MPC's Higher Education Consortium continues to create opportunities for students to connect, support their work as emerging filmmakers, and access the industry. This spring we returned in person for the IFFBoston Student Film Showcase, and in the fall presented a new Student Media Summit hosted by Middlesex Community College.

Collectively, these programs engaged hundreds of students from dozens of public and private academic institutions, and numerous non-profit education programs supporting underserved communities. We are truly excited to build on this work to have an even greater impact going forward.

Most of all, we want to thank you for your participation and support of these efforts!

You make this community truly special and we're honored to keep growing our work together and build a healthy and bright future for the film and media industry together.

Wishing you the best and brightest year ahead!
